Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio

I lost my job, my house was forclosed, I'm on SS only. I owe a debt that I can't pay for an appliance that I was paying on up to losing my job and had it paid down to under $900. Now they say I owe $3000 and have filed a claim in court. What can they do to me in court? The appliance is 5yrs old.

The company that sued you can, if they win, try to collect from you. Ohio law prohibits the garnishment (court ordered taking) of your social security payments. The company can also try to seize certain assets and sell them to pay the debt, but certain basic assets are also off limits for collection. You should consider talking to your local legal aid office about getting an attorney to represent you. You can also try negotiating with the attorney who filed the suit. Sometimes (but not always) the attorney is more reasonable than the client.
