Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Ohio
Repayment
My husband and I let an old Navy buddy we have known for 7 years stay with us for 8 months. This was because he was relocating because of a job and couldn't afford to move his wife and daughter up until their house sold in Texas. Basically he lived rent free, ate for free, did everything for free. The verbal agreement was that once he sold his house and moved his family up here he would repay us what he owed us. Well, he had an argument with my husband and we kicked him out (the roommate was bi-polar and wasn't taking meds) because we were unsure of his mood swings. In the process of the argument he punched our car window breaking the whole thing. Do we have legal right to sue him or contact him for repayment? I've heard that he should reimburse us for 1/3 of all costs for 8 months (mortgage, food, utilities, phone, car window, etc.). Is this correct? Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I feel that my husband should be reimbursed for being such a nice friend.

Re: Repayment
You can try to get your money back. I would estimate your chances of success at around 50%. The fact that your agreement was not in writing makes this a more difficult case to pursue in total. Other questions that come to mind are whether or not you kept receipts during the time your friend stayed with you and did you file a police report about the broken car window?
