Roommate backed out

Wondering what my options were...

My roommate backed out of living with me 2 weeks before our lease began. Turns out she didn't sign the lease although she told me she was going to. She did put down her $800 security deposit (which she lost b/c she didn't move in). Now I have to pay the full amount and think that she should pay her portion since I could not find another roommate in such a short amount of time.

Do I have a case for a verbal contract?

You might try small claims court but withiout a written contract, it will be hard to win. The best place to take it would be small claims since they tend to relax strict legal interpretations there.
