Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Ohio
public domain abroad
I have translated the poems of a Chilean poet who dies in 1957. Her literary executor is still alive, but Chile has placed her poems in the public domain. A book of translations was published in the united states by a chilean editor without permission of the executor in 1984.
Does this mean I can publish my translations, or must I get permission?

You must obtain permission since US copyright law applies.
