Legal Question in Employment Law in Ohio

Discrimination and defamation of character based on stereotypes

I am employeed as a computer technician for a major electronics retailer, and they are now redesigning our department, and changing our look, our way of doing business, and how wer are portrayed to the customers. They are changing our job titles and our uniforms. All this would be fine, if they weren't also including some hurtful stereotypes into our new ''job description'' They are using the terms similar to geek or dork to describe us because we work on computers, but also are including advertisments to our customers that go along with the stereotype of being a ''geek'' or a ''dork'' by saying things like (i.e.: we are dedicated because we can't get dates, or we don't have anything else to do because we can't get dates, that we get rejected for dates, and things like thaat we need tape for our glasses. In my opinion this is hurtful and unneccessary, and is not needed for the purpose of advertising our services. I would like to know what my legal rights are, if any. I don't agree that the company should be able to use the above mentioned examples to advertise the service I provide, and have provided for over 5 years.

Re: Discrimination and defamation of character based on stereotypes

You and your fellow employees may have some recourse. While use of the terms "geek" and "nerd" do not rise to the level of racial or sexual harassment, you may be able to present an argument based upon a theory of "hostile work environment"

please contact me so that we can discuss your potential claim in further detail.
