Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Ohio

Are we allowed to attend our own eviction hearing?

Do Ohio citizens have the right to attend court for their own eviction? When I complained to the police about my landlord threatening me, I found myself facing a gas leak in my home, further harassment (utility disruption and noise), and eventually was thrown in jail. Then, the landlord started an eviction. While the bailiff served me with a summons at the jail, I was not permitted to go to the courthouse next door for it. The rent was paid. I was eventually determined to be not guilty, but this was quite costly.

Normally, one can attend their own hearing, however due to the fact that you are in jail, you would need to get special permission for the jailer to transport you to the hearing. It sounds like retaliatory eviction to me, but I would contact local counsel to investigate.

Good luck!!!!!!!!
