Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Ohio

JUST GOT FIRED and have 11 month lease

I was just fired from my job May 7, 2002. I was offered this job while having just relocated to Florida (Dec. 16, 2001), from Indiana. I Moved 1500 miles to Toledo, Ohio, to start this job in January 21, 2002. The area Manager offered me a salary of $40,000 after 90 days; I got an apartment with 13 month lease (1st 2 months was free)

at $645. p/month; The Area Manager signed statement as to my salary and sent to my new Landlord. I was fired from my job Tuesday, May 7, at 5:00 pm I have incurred enormous expense moving here with the promise of $40,000 year salary which she signed, plus commission and bonuses; I am now unemployed and have 11 months to go on a lease I can't possibly fulfill. My 90 days at the job was up on April 21, 2002. I owe approximately 7,095 to my landlord for the term of my lease. I had previously filed bankruptcy and since that time, worked very hard to rebuild my credit to where I was when I came to this job. I am of course going to seek employment, but in my home state of Indiana. IS THERE ANY RECOURSE FOR ME IN THIS SITUATION, against my former employer, and some compromise for the debt I have with my Landlord?

Re: JUST GOT FIRED and have 11 month lease

You present two different issues. First, as for recourse against your former employer, you do not provide enough information to adequately advise you. Ohio follows the doctrine of employment at will, which means without an employment contract an employee can be discharged at any time for any nondiscriminatory reason. The question is whether her promise to you was sufficient enough to form a contract. Second, as for your issue with your landlord, I suggest you be candid with your landlord and ask that the apartment be put back on the market. You will be responsible for the rent until the apartment rents, but that may only take a month or so. Even if you share the cost to advertisement the apartment, you should end up ahead.
