fraudulant claims of military service
is it illegal to falsely claim combat duty and injury due to combat?

You can write your mom and claim you were blown in half by a bomb, and not have anything other than maternal disapproval. However, if you make an official claim, in an official document, or as part of a statement in a formal investigation, that you were injured during combat, that may take the form of a material false statement that could incur criminal liability. If you falsely claim combat duty in order to draw combat pay, that too can carry with it penalties and you could be required to repay the combat pay.
