Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in Pennsylvania

Criminal Appeals

If someone has been found guilty of Aggravated Assault, when can the appeals process begin ? We have been told that we have to wait until after sentencing, but I wanted to know if any motions could be done prior to sentencing and what these motions could be.

Thank you for your time
