unfair work conditions

i work at a famous store i was told i was a 40 hour a week person now they have cut us all to 37 hours. but yet if they need help we stay on and help them. but then at the end of the pay peroid they make you sit and wait to punch in so you do not get over your schuled hours to me that is not fair. they have been sued several times for things. can they do that
