Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Pennsylvania

Incident in Grocery Store involving employee and my daughter

While in a grocery store today an employee of the store noted the tee shirt my daughter was wearing (it was a shirt in support of Barack Obama). The store employee read the shirt and stated to my daughter ''You disgust me.'' A few words were exchanged and the employee stated he was joking...clearly he was not. I reported the incident to the store manager, but wonder if there is anything legally we can do against the store. My daughter is very upset about this incident. She was belittled and felt attacked. I don't know who to talk to about this. I'm not even sure if any law was broken in speaking to a customer like that. It clearly goes against the ''code of ethics'' of this store, as they pride themselves in the respect which they show their customers. It is a Christian-run small grocery chain. Thank you for your help.

Re: Incident in Grocery Store involving employee and my daughter

Your daughter was exercising her free speech rights by wearing the shirt, and the employee was exercising his free speech rights by saying what he said to your daughter.

It really is up to the store to deal with their employees and how they deal with customers. It's a private issue, not a legal issue, with regard to the encounter between the employee and your daughter.

What you can do is not go into the store any more. Given that they are a "Christian" store, they are not really showing "Christian" values by treating their customers in this manner. You should shop elsewhere.

Or even better, if they are on a public sidewalk, stand outside and campaign for Barack Obama.
