Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Pennsylvania

psychiatric committed

My friend told someone he would kill himself but not seriously. They called the police who came and handcuffed him and had him committed to a hospital pyschiatric unit. He was told he can't leave and will probably be there for at least 25 days. Does he have any legal right to discharge himself or to a shorter stay? They told him he has an upcoming hearing with a judge.
