can arresting detectives question thier own witness's at the preliminary?
i have a case in front of me where a state police officer is asking and objecting to questions at a preliminary hearing? is this legal?

Yes, they are allowed to ask questions of the witness and cross examine any witnesses the defendant has. They are acting as the District Attorney at the preliminary hearing. They may only do this at the preliminary hearing.
