Good question! The answer depends on whether or not you've settled every issue.

If you've settled every issue with your spouse, you can probably do the entire divorce yourselves with help from a "do it yourself" divorce book. Nolo.com has several--be sure and buy a California book to get the right procedure. You can also use a document preparation service.

If you haven't settled every issue, and need to resolve some or all of the issues in your case, consider mediation. My web site, peace-talks.com, explains a little about mediation. If you aren't in the Santa Monica/LA area, there's also reasonably priced mediation centers called mostenmediation.com. They operate on a sliding scale.

There's a few other resources in the LA area. If you call the Los Angeles County Bar Association, they have a pre-recorded line with local agencies which can help.
