Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania
Verbal Harassment
Approximately three of employees quit, transferred and recently forced out of positions they held with the County office due to elected officials or their deputies.
Recent Case:
John filed a grievance with the Employee Relations Department regarding this Deputy. Witnesses and other employees were also called in. Result, harasser was not punished. Unfortunately, it has been known for years that this Deputy continuously verbally harasses employees.
John worked for the County approximately 20 years. He recently left the office 20 minutes earlier due to more verbally abuse. Before leaving he informed his boss (the abuser and the elected official) that he had a scheduled Friday off for a funeral. Over the weekend John received a letter from the office that he abandoned his position and such action calls for termination.
John immediately called but the Employee Relation ignored the calls as well as the officials.
I advised John to file a complaint with the EEOC. John has put in 20 years of service with good or better performance appraisals until two years ago when he started his grievance.
Since PA has liberal employment laws, besides the EEOC, should he see a lawyer?

Re: Verbal Harassment
I think it would be wise for John to contact a lawyer. PA is not generally very friendly to employees. However, John may have remedies avaialbe to him I would be happy to discuss this with you or John further.
