Does a life insurance policy holder need a will for the benefactor to be able to collect the life insurance?

Generally you would need a death certificate. The easiest and cheapest way to find out exactly what you need is to call the insurance company that issued the policy and ask.

As long as the policy names a beneficiary, no will would be necessary.
