Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Rhode Island

security deposit

I recently graduated from college

where i rented an apartment during

my stay. I payed rent on time every

month and never missed a payment

and caused no damage to the

apartment. It has been about 7

weeks since moving out and haven't

heard from my landlord on the issue.

I keep calling and he doesn't return

my calls. My question for you is how

much long should I wait before

sueing him for the return of my

security deposit?

RI law requires that a landlord return any security deposit together with a notice itemizing any claimed deductions within 20 days after the last to occur of the tenant vacates and leaves a forwarding address. Failure to comply could cost a landlord attorneys fees and additional damages equal to twice the amount of the security deposit withheld.
