Legal Question in Consumer Law in South Carolina

Billing

My father died over 6 years ago. I paid the funeral home the amount in full. My mother received a bill today from the funeral home for $1200 in unpaid expenses. This is the first bill we have ever received claiming additional money was due. I do not have receipts from that many years ago. Does the funeral home have the right to now make these claims? I paid in full, but after this much time I have no way to prove it. What can my mother and I do to avoid paying what at best is a very late claim and what I sincerely believe to be an invalid claim since I paid in full within a month of my father's funeral?

Re: Billing

Request from the funeral home all of the documents which you signed at your father's death. Also request copies of all invoices, bills, payments, accountings and correspondence. It is possible that (1) the funeral home got your account mixed up with another or made some sort of mistake; (2) they are trying to rip you off; (3) there was an omission 6 years ago; or ??. Don't agree to anything unless you are completely convinced that you owe the money. $1200 is not much money for a funeral home, but it is a lot for a widow. After you get the information and cannot resolve it, call for a free consutation.
