Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in South Carolina

Privacy Rights breached

I am unemployed and out of work, really late with a small loan company. An employee came to my 82 year old grandmother's house and told her details on my account including the date of the loan, days past due, amount financed, collateral used, date and amount of last payment and threatened to put me in jail for 45 days. When I got home, my grandmother was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She has told me she can't deal with people coming by her house and threatening so I have a week to find a place to live. What type of lawyer do I need and what are my rights?

Re: Privacy Rights breached

As long as your grandmother is not a signatory to the loan being collected, this company has violated state and possibly federal laws in its collection attempt. However, there are a lot of facts that need to be ascertained first, before an attorney could advise you.

I URGE you to contact a consumer lawyer in South Carolina immediately. You can call my office for a short, free phone consultation if you like, or you can use the SC Bar's "Find a Lawyer" site at http://www.scbar.org/public_services/find_a_lawyer/.

Don't delay, though!
