my question to you is should I retain a lawyer, at the top of front page it is marked that this case is subject to mediation, should I wait and see what happens, or should I obtain a lawyer

If you want to keep the children, then you need to consult an attorney IMMEDIATELY to discuss this situation. If you do nothing, then it's almost guaranteed that someone else will end up with custody of the children, possibly well before mediation takes place.
These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
