Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in South Carolina

leasing laws

I signed a contract on April 25, to lease a home. On April 28, I notified the property owner that I wanted to cancell the contract. I put a $1000.00 security deposit and $1100.00 for May rent down. Am I entitled to any of the money back? I never occupied the property and have not received a copy of the contract. Thank you

Re: leasing laws

You put down $1000 without ANYTHING in writing?

First, you'll have to prove it. Second, there are rules about leases, deposits and such.

If there was no written agreement, the landlord might be restricted to a monthly tenancy. In any event, having paid that much money, you will now have to either negotiate to get your money back or take them to small claims.

If negotiation fails, you should consult a lawyer, to find out what your rights are.
