Legal Question in Personal Injury in South Carolina

potential lawsuit

Last month, my husband became highly intoxicated after going out for drinks with my brother-in-law. My husband had recently started anti-depressants and the mixture caused him to black out and become out of control (very unusual for him). My brother-in-law was intoxicated as well, and he tried to restrain him while we awaited police. They struggled, and were both sore and scratched up. The policeman sent for an ambulance. They both went to the emergency room, but had no major injuries. My brother-in-law has begun dropping off his medical bills at our house (they were filed with his insurance but his personal liability is probably going to be $1000+), assuming we will pay them. I am worried that if we don't pay them, he will sue us. Since this incident, we have also discovered he has been abusing prescription medicine for quite a while and my sister has left him. We have already given him money that he asked for because he claimed he couldn't work and that his phone was broken during the incident (@$500). I don't want to keep paying him for something I believe was both their fault, but will do it to avoid a future lawsuit if I can. I need any advice you can give.
