No written contract on work done, contractor threatening lien against property

We had our kitchen renovated by a contractor. We had a verbal agreement for $3500.00 which was paid. After work was completed the contractor brought in a contract he wanted us to sign after the fact. The contract stated we owed him 6500.00 for the work done. Needless to say the contract was not signed by me or my wife. Now the contractor is threatening to put a lien against our house/property. Can this be done? Our residence has a homestead exemption.

He may file a lien affidavit, but it will not be valid.

You may explain to him that if he files a lien affidavit he will be improperly placing a cloud upon your title, and find himself on the wrong end of a lawsuit.
