employment/deferred adjudication

I am applying for a job in publishing. When asked on the application if I have been found guilty of a crime do I have to disclose a deferred adjudication for possession of marijuana from 1980? I completed 6 months probation.

Several years ago I did not pass a background check to volunteer in my child's school because of this offense.

The legally correct answer to the Q of GUILT is "no" if you completed deferred. However, they will see the charge when they do a background check - just like they did at the school. You really should look into a non-disclosure (ND).
