Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

possible prosecution

I applied for a wk. from home job on-line. The company welcomed me to the company. they told me the job was to get a check in the mail, cash it then send it on to whomever. ok i got a check in the mail, cashed it took out my percentage as told. I cashed the check on a satuday afternoon, monday morning, the company put a stop payment on the check. 2-3 wks. later a policeman shows up and tells me that i have to make restitution to the check casher or go to jail. Since the check was made out to me, payable to me by this company, am i responsible for paying this money back to the check casher when the company was the one who stopped the payment on the check? The check was not stolen it was sent to me by them, cashed as they requested, then they stopped the payment of the check. can i go to jail for this? am i responsible for the re-payment or is it the company since they stopped the payment 48 hrs later? I need to know this please who is reponsible? can i go to jail?

Re: possible prosecution

I cannot see how this constitutes criminal conduct. It does appear that you are civilly responsible for the debt, and have the right to then sue the company that issued and stopped payment on the check.
