Trash thieves
Is it against the law if somebody steal your personal item from your trash?

Caselaw has held that trash is abandoned property. The caselaw that I am familiar with relates to law enforcement taking trash bags to search for evidence of drugs or contraband, without a warrant. Such activity has been held to be legal.
My guess is that if it's abandoned as to the cops then it is abandoned as to other people too.
