Is it necessary to get a lawyer for my first DUI?

It is never necessary to get a lawyer, as you can always represent yourself pro se.
The outcome is usually significantly better for you, if you are represented by counsel.

Two additional observations - if you cannot afford a lawyer, the Public Defender will represent you in the defense of any misdemeanor or felony matter without charge, if you want; also, whether you "need" a layer may depend upon whether there are issues with the charge, such as a faulty roadside sobriety check, or on the other hand whether the case is a slam dunk for the prosecutor.
