My son was arrested on a dwi the officers serched his vihicle and waited about an hour before they took a breath anlalsis, which showed .09. Should he get a lawyer, what fines might he have to pay and could he have to spend time for a first time offince.

He absolutely needs an attorney. The fines, insurance costs, effect on his driver's license, and number of community service hours have to be weighed against the cost of an attorney. Generally, the costs (direct and indirect) assessed against a pro-se defendant outweigh the costs of a lawyer.
