Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
My daughter's biological father has not seen her in years. I spoke with him and he has agreed that he wants to sign his rights to her away. What is the process in doing this? Do i just need to pay an attorney to write up paperwork and we can sign and it be done or is it more complicated then that? We both are in agreement on this so i am hoping it will be an easy process and i would like to get started on it asap.

I can appreciate your desire to accomplish this easily and quickly, however, it is not that simple. Generally, courts are reluctant to approve a termination of parental rights, as there is one less parent to be responsible for the needs of the child. There are of course exceptions, the most common being a simultaneous stepparent adoption. It is not merely 'paperwork', but a legal process that has lifetime implications for all of the parties, which the court takes very seriously. Consult a family lawyer to determine if, in fact, your circumstances make this a viable option. Good luck.
