Legal Question in Immigration Law in Texas

my boyfriend and his family came to the united states to attend a family funeral with what im guessing was a temporary visa? it of course expired, but they never returned to mexico. my boyfriend is now 18 and about to graduate from highschool and wishes to become a legal u.s resident. will marrying him be the quickest way for him to obtain residency or is there other options?
