Legal Question in Immigration Law in Texas
I have a friend I've invited from Indonesia for a holiday, so we are in the process of getting a non-immigrant Visa. I've got an attorney helping me with information, processes, and invitation letters, but he is in a different state and we have never met. He stated he wants a copy of her (from Indonesia) birth certificate, passport, and a copy of the completed DS-156 and 157. When I asked why he needed a copy of these things, he said it was to ensure everything matched, and the spellings were all correct. The embassy will also review theses things. Is it normal for the attorney to want a copy of these also, and is there any criminal activity one could use a copy of those documents for? Thank you for anyone that can help with my question.
1 Answer from Attorneys
He/she is your attorney. I am assuming from your post, that he is representing you and your friend in this matter. Also, attorneys often help to complete the forms DS-156 and DS-157. Why would you want to hide information from him? If you don't trust your own lawyer, why to hire them? Attorney-client relationship is confidential.
On the other hand, the embassy is not there to "review" the papers. They are not going to point out some inconsistencies or errors and give you an extra time to correct. They will scrutinize the documents and the answers and can deny the application.
