If you came to USA on a visa, were inspected and admitted - you might be eligible to apply for a green card/permanent residency trough adjustment of status. In such a case, you might be able to adjust status without having to go back to your home country to apply for a visa. You need to make sure that you properly apply for adjustment AND that you are not inadmissible.

From the facts you presented, your last entry to the US was legal. As such you should be able to adjust your status in the US following your marriage. It is important to review your history and documents prior to submission to USCIS. If you cannot afford to retain an attorney to represent you, at least consider retaining an attorney to review your package prior to submission to USCIS.
