If your mother is eligible to apply for citizenship, that would speed up the process, and you would be immediately eligible to receive your permanent residence. You should speak with an attorney soon, before you turn 21, to ensure you are entitled to this benefit.

You are in 2B category now if you are over 21, and can't go back to 2A. (2A category is for spouses and minor children under 21).

Depending on your country of birth (if Mexico), there is a long wait for your priority number to become current and a visa number to become available.

No, you are not eligible for a work permit and can't live legally in USA while waiting for your priority date/visa number.

You should keep in mind that if you are not protected under INA 245i, you will not be eligible for a green card through adjustment of status when a visa number is available. If the DREAM Act will become a law, you may have a legal avenue to become a resident as well.

Why didn't you become a permanent resident with your mother if you were a child and living with her in USA?
