Legal Question in Immigration Law in Utah
Helping out a start-up company for free
Can a h1b visa holder, help out a start-up company(or soon to be) for free? If a person who is starting a company needs help, and a h1b visa holder is willing to help(such as putting a website together) for free in his spare time, would that be okay? Does this inflict any immigration law? Or any labor law?

Dear Inquirer:
An H-1B visa holder may not "work" for an employer other than an H-1B petitioning company. Helping out a friend is not technically employment, so you should not be violating your status solely by virtue of helping out your friend.
