Legal Question in Immigration Law in Vermont
Divorce and its affects
I would like to get a divorce from my abusive husband who was my sponsor for getting my green card. We have been married for 7 yrs and I have had permanent resident status since 2003. In March of 2005 my petition to have restrictions lifted from my residency were lifted and I received my permanent resident card that does not expire until 2010. If my husband and I do divorce, will my status be revocked and will I have to move back to my country or origin in Canada?

Re: Divorce and its affects
No. Your permanent resident card will not be revoked. However, you must wait five years from the time the PR card was issued prior to applying for citizenship [instead of the three year waiting period given to spouses of United States citizens]
