Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Limited divorce

I have been granted a limited divorce in Maryland. I no longer reside there and neither does my ex. We have been apart since 1 apr 2003. I am in VA and she is in GA, I want to get an absolute divorce. What steps should i take? Does the limited divorce document count as a separation agreement or can it be converted into an absolute divorce?

Re: Limited divorce

Virginia has somehting similar to what you've described. It's called a divorce "A mensa et thoro", meaning divorce from bed and board. It is a kind of interim less than final divorce that at some point is usally converted into a final decree.

Assuming that that also is the case with Maryland, your actions to have your Maryland limited divorce converted into a final decree would necessarily need to start in the Maryland court which issued your limited divorce.
