Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Marriage License take 2
We had a quickie wedding (in Nevada) due to a military deployment. We now wish to be married in the catholic church, but in order to have the full wedding, will need to be unmarried and have a certificate for the priest to sign off on. Can we get a second marriage license in Virginia? How much trouble could this cause? Do the states check other states for previous marriages?

Re: Marriage License take 2
You cannot be "unmarried" if you've already concluded a valid civil marriage. As I understand it, the way this situation is normally handled, is that the Catholic priest conducts the religious part of the ceremony but not the civil. The civil marriage documents should be presented to the priest well before the
scheduled religious rite and you do not apply for a second marriage license in Virgina nor any place else in order to have the Catholic religious ceremonial part conducted in your behalf.
You, apparently, will also be required to complete whatever marriage counseling classes are
required prior to the religious rite.
