Legal Question in Immigration Law in Virginia
A lawyer helped me with a simple immigration case is charging me $2000. I filled out the paperwork but he reviewed it and sent it out. The charge amount seems very unfair to me. We've only dealt over the phone and the total phone conversation wasn't even an hour. If i don't pay him he said he will send it out to a collection agency. How will my credit be affected and can he sue me for not paying him? I didn't sign any paperwork. Thanks!

If this is only for a review of the applications that you've prepared, yes, that'd too high. However, I understand that you signed a retainer agreement with that lawyer in writing and promised to pay him $2,000 for the work he already did for you (even if only over the phone, mail, etc). Also, it seems that he had become your Attorney of record on this case.
You could have contacted other lawyers and compared prices before entering into an agreement with your lawyer. Because this is a public forum, it's impossible to judge whether this was indeed a "simple immigration case" and if this amount is reasonable and typical for this kind of case.
