residential lease renewal

My lease states that at end of term the lease will automatically renew for one year unless I give notice to the landlord. I s this legal in Virginia or is the term month to moonth?

Yes (it is legal), and therefore you should give the required notice to the landlord not to renew the lease for one year at the end of its term if you want to convert it to month to month.
