Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
What rights do I have if I am renting an townhouse from someone else that name is not on the deed. I have been here for almost an year and 3 months. There is no lease agreement between me and the person and the owner of the house told me the past three month that he was going to take over the place. So now he sent me an letter and drop it off in the mail box the other day I guess because I was not home over the weekend. He is saying that I have no right to be leaving in here and that I am renting from someone else that the person name is not on the deed. So what right do I have being that I have the rent coming out of my pay check every two weeks and that I am paid up with the person that I am renting from. Can the legal person that the name is on the deed can kick me out with out any warning. Also the person that does own the town house does not have a key to the place so that tell me that something is kind of funny about this matter.

Unless this "someone else" whom you believe that you're renting from is a legitimate tenant/occupier in
this townhouse whose name is listed on a valid/current lease and with a provision that allows
him or her to sublease the unit to you, you then very likely have no legal right of occupancy whatsoever to currently reside in this townhouse as you've apparently been doing for well more than a year now and in the eyes of the law probably have no more rights with respect to the true owner of this property than an acknowledged squatter would have.in similar circumstances ( in my opinion).
