Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Sued for back-rent without a lease agreement

I lived with my fiance (the homeowner) for approximately 17 months. During this time, I was a full-time student with no income. At no point in time did I verbally or in writing agree to pay any amount for living expenses, nor was I asked to by my ex-fiance. Since our split, I have moved out and he is sueing me for 12 months worth of back rent. Does he have a case?

Hard to say(without knowing more of the relevant facts), but it's within the arena of legal possibility (in my opinion) that a court could find that under these circumstances that there was something akin to an implied contract, and, that consequently you owe some or all of your former fiance's claim(s) to damages.
