Re: speeding ticket

Offer the prosecutor persuasive reasons(mitigating evidence)on the day your case is scheduled for a hearing as to why the speeding charge should be reduced. And, if for whatever reason you may feel that you cannot do this on your own, then hire a lawyer do it for you.

Re: speeding ticket

The most important factor in Virginia for getting a speeding ticket or even a more serious charge reduced (such as reckless driving) is to show that you have a good driving record. This is of enormous importance in Virginia. Logically, it really should not make any difference. Either you did it or you did not do it. But the courts and prosecutors decide whether to cut you a deal based on whether you have a good driving record. But once you have a bad driving record, they figure you have had your chance, and so they will slam you.

Do not rely on your memory alone. Request an official copy of your driving record. And you might be able to go in for driving school before your court date and show that you are trying to mend your ways.

However, 70 in a 55 is only 15 MPH over. There is almost nothing less than that except maybe 9 MPH over the posted speed limit. You are lucky that you were not going 75 and charged with reckless driving. (20 MPH over the speed limit is a CRIME in Virginia, but nobody tells you that.)
