Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

Estate of a Family Member

My uncle has left me as an heir. One of his sisters told me however we have not been on good terms in over 20 years. She told me to write another one of my aunts with my contact information. My question is: What if I do not hear anything else about this? What if my information is not forwarded to whoever is handling the estate? Is there any way to insure I am not ''forgotten'' by the other family members?

Re: Estate of a Family Member

The law requires that the administrator/executor of the estate take certain steps to make sure that beneficiaries are not "forgotten." I would suggest determining who the administrator/executor of the estate is and sending him or her your contact information via a written letter with a copy of the letter to the court that is handling probate of the estate (usually the circuit court where you uncle last resided). You may be able to get the name of the administrator/executor from the court. If one has not yet been named, or you have trouble getting a name, you could go ahead and send your contact information to both aunts with a copy to the court.
