Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

My mother passed away suddenly 2 years ago I am 35 have always lived with her and helped her with bills I also have a brother who has never helped our mother I stayed in the home and have been doing repairs and paying mortgage and taxes and insurance myself am I expected to buy my brother out of this house.

There's not really enough information to answer that question. If your mother did not have a will leaving you everything, or own the house jointly with you, then you and your brother jointly own the house, and you would have to settle up with him before it is yours alone.
