Legal Question in Business Law in Washington

Selling Kits

I'm interested in buying kits for a computer that one installs in their car for fuel economy display, assembling them, and then re-selling them marked up. Is this legal? And if something goes wrong with their car or if they install it wrong am I liable?

Re: Selling Kits

This question goes way beyond the purpose of this forum, but here is a broad answer, that you should follow up by consulting an attorney who would have to go over a lot of details with you. If you are serious about this, it will be money well spent. That said, you'll want a business attorney with experience in new product launches, which is not me, and hence this basic advice for now.

Your idea is a legal one. Lots of companies make aftermarket products for cars that if used wrong can cause damage, or even bodily injury and death. Which leads to your second question about liability. The short answer is yes, you CAN be liable if something goes wrong, but that will be entirely dependent on the individual facts of the situation.

In general, you will want to make sure that every reasonably foreseeable problem is addressed and that you have more than adequate warnings and labels all over your product and in its manuals about safe use and the dangers of not using the product as intended.

Again, there is a lot more to do this than what I write here, but this is just meant to give you a very brief hint of an overview. Best of luck to you.
