Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

if my baby's father's girlfriend threatened to do bodily harm to me in a facebook message. What kind of legal action can I take? I'm pregnant and have no other children. I have no problem with the father having visitation if he want. I just don't trust his girlfriend around me or my baby. What can I do?

You can seek an anti-harassment order or an order of protection against the girlfriend. I advise you to be mindful of whether she was merely venting on FB versus issuing a real and what you perceive to be credible threat. I've seen many cases where an ex does not like the new girlfriend or boyfriend and uses a social networking vent or tirade expressed to a third party that in reality was not meant literally.

You file, you go to court, and if you had a positive relationship with your ex, now he'll be your enemy and most uncooperative with you when it comes to working things out for your child's best interests. If that is what this is about, be weary, because this can come back to hurt you worse than it hurts the new girlfriend.

On the other hand, if you are doing this this purely for your own self protection, then you have no choice but to proceed. Expect the same problems described above, but they cannot sway your decision, since death threats or threats to do great bodily injury override everything else.

You can hire an attorney to help, or you can try to get the protection order yourself by going to the local courthouse and asking for a domestic violence advocate's help.
