Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

My father just passed away last december and I have became an emancipated minor at the age of 16. Did he still have to pay child support after i was empancipated? Who should that money be going to?

If you are emancipated, and living with your mother, your mother may still qualify for child support. It all depends on when you were emancipated, and what the child support order says should happen in the event of your father's passing away before the support obligation ends.

I often have language in my support orders that specifies that the parent paying support shall maintain life insurance, the proceeds of which shall at least cover his child support obligation. Even without that, you or your mother may be able to contest his estate, if it has value, to have a court award you some support. Whether it goes to you or your mother (I am going to presume it goes to you as an emancipated minor, without seeing the various court orders, not knowing how your mother fits in the picture, and not having researched this point lately.)
