Legal Question in Family Law in Washington
My son's father quit his job and dissapeared 10 months ago. We had no contact or money from him during this time. He is back and wanting to see our son (4yrs) but offers no money and I am concerned he is a flight risk with our son. Do I have to let him see him? Can I request supervised visits? Is this considdered abandonment?

If you truly believe he is a flight risk, you can ask the court for an emergency order limiting him to supervised visits only. Do this in conjunction with a petition to modify the parenting plan that allows you to unilaterally cut off visitation if the father in the future disappears for stretches of time. At 10 months, it is not abandonment, as defined by statute, but it is pushing it, to the point that I think you can modify the parenting plan as currently written.
That said, before you go through all this trouble and end of in court a lot or spending thousands on an attorney, may I suggest that you first contact the father, and have him over or meet him someplace for a "heart to heart," wherein you ask him where he's been and why he practically abandoned his son. He has explaining to do and you have a right to know. Flat out ask him, why should you continue to be allowed to see [your son's name] when you then get up and disappear like this?
Once you have a feeling for what's really going on, if you can get one, then determine how to proceed.
