Make the payments to protect your credit rating because if you have a good rating now, (say 700+ FICO) making a car payment to protect it is far cheaper and better for you financially than not making the payment.

While you are making the payment, go over your decree of dissolution and make sure there is a "hold harmless" provision in it. If there is, it typically requires the ex-wife to reimburse you for whatever your costs are to protect yourself from her inactionin this case, making the car paymentsand then file a motion for contempt of the decree and as a possible sanction, as that the car be sold (if it is not upside down on the loan to value ratio) so that you can protect your credit. Alternatively, if it is upside down, ask that possession of the car be awarded to you until the ex at least comes up to date on payments and reimburses you for your out of pocket payments. If she needs a car, that will motivate her if she has the means to pay for it.
