Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington

managers harassment

My apt manager is only 19 and was arrested this summer for underage drinking. This past week, she was drunk and was outside yelling at my 14 year old daughter and pointing her finger into her chest asking where her mom was. The manager showed up at my apt drunk and verbually abusive to me, yelling in my face, etc. This is not the first time this has happened to me or others in the apt complex, what can I do to stop her?

Re: managers harassment

I would write to management, and follow up your letter with a call. Let them know you do not pay rent to be harassed my their management. Demand a partial refund on the rent. Tell them that this had better not happen again, or you will hold them civilly responsible for any assault upon your child by their employee. Further, remind them that if this happens again, you will pursue a restraining order, and pursue them for the attorney fees and costs associated with obtaining the restraining order in the first place.

Good luck!

Get a restraining order. Go to District Court. Tell the judge in your declaration the dates + times this has occurred and ask to have an order issued restraining her from contacting you and your kids. They cannot charge you money for this, and even though the clerks may be less than helpful, you have a right to this protection. Go get it.

Alternatively, if you are on decent terms with the owner of your building, write him or her a letter and tell them what's going on. I know the modern instinct is to pick up the phone, and you can do that but also send a letter - otherwise your complaint is worthless.

If you get the restraining order make an extra copy and send it to the owner. If you have issues regarding getting assistance for repairs or paying rent, figure out some other way to get the $ to the owner and always ask for repairs in writing. Good luck - Powell
